Why Write Your Story?

Five years ago, as I recovered from writing my first book, the messages started coming. Friends, acquaintances, friends-of-friends, and relatives began telling me that they had books on their heart also. They felt called to write books, or they dreamed of publishing a book one day.

Meanwhile I would walk through bookstores or library, noting how the hottest books were often focused on scandal, pain, darkness, and evil. I'd think about all those people I've met who have a story to tell - stories filled with hope, life, redemption, and faith. I want to see more of those stories written.

I found that writing the infertility book God called me to write has been worthwhile, and I encourage others to write what God is putting on their heart to write. My experience of telling our story from the middle and reflecting our faith in God even before we knew if He would make us parents one day, had proven to be worthwhile. For several years I've watched people who needed to hear my story find more hope. And that was my goal in writing - that people would be infused with hope in God as they read my first book.

A few years ago I began jotting down everything I had learned about writing and publishing.

I wrote about overcoming fear. I wrote about not spending too much money to publish your first book. I wrote about practical ways for busy people to write. I wrote about how to launch a book.

Within a few months, I had written a short book for new authors - especially Christian authors, because that's my area of expertise. Timidly I shared the idea with others, and people began reading my rough drafts - and they liked it! They were writing more, and encouraging their friends and family members to finish writing that book that had been buried away.

Many times I've wondered "who am I to write this book?" I know that I am not the most qualified, but I'm determined, and when I believe God is prompting me to write and share something, I do my best to follow through. The book Write Your Story is one of those promptings.

Proverbs 20:5 says, “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” Through this scripture God reminded me that each writer I meet has a deep well of words that need to be shared. It's my desire to obey the Holy Spirit by helping each person draw out what God had placed inside his or her heart.
