Shark Tank & Asking God

Last night, with a tummy full of pizza, in the silence of a house with no sound other than the TV, I spent an hour watching my current favorite TV show: Shark Tank. (If you haven't watched this show, entrepreneurs present their business ideas to "sharks" - the wealthy investors - and if the sharks buy the idea, they negotiate an investment deal. Often the contestants on the show are seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars - occasionally more.)

In this recent episode, the final pair presented their business idea for which they were requesting an investment. During their discussion with the sharks, I experienced a brief, yet holy moment as I whispered to the guys on TV: Be bold with your request.

In my Friday-night-sleepy-pizza-filled-haze, I realized that this is what it can be like to bring our requests to God. He has the all resources we could ever need, and when our requests line up with His vision, we might as well ask big, knowing that He is able.

As I watched this reality show, these guys asked boldly, and were awarded a 1.5 million dollar investment. That moment changed their business, and I'm sure it changed their lives!

Coming to God with our requests is kind of like this, but God is not a shark.

When our requests line up with His will, He's not going to tell us our ideas are stupid.

He's not going to say, "I'm sorry, but I'm out."

He loves more than any loving father on this earth has ever loved - and He wants to give us gifts unlike any other.

Sometimes, all I can see are the storms of life, when I should be searching for the treasures that He has washed onto the shore. (I wrote about that recently in this post.)

Instead of focusing on the storms, I'm learning to look at the God behind it. Like those two guys on Shark Tank last night, I want to come boldly before the throne of God with my requests. My requests are personal and they are big. My God created me and knows me better than any other, and He is greater than anyone or anything.

So it's time to step before God, the one with all the resources in the world, and humbly yet boldly present my request.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace,
that we may obtain mercy
and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 NKJV

 

And I will do whatever you ask in My name,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it.
