Live Your Life Like a Hunting Dog

Okay, before I begin I must confess that I don’t know much about hunting dogs other than what I learned by watching Disney’s Fox and Hound in my childhood. However, I just want to make one point today.

Last month I shared a blog post “Worship Like a Hunting Dog” where I described a sermon illustration that has helped me to focus more on God during times of praise and worship.

 

A friend then commented about creation pointing us toward God, and I began thinking more about it. The Bible says that God has set eternity in the hearts of men (Ecc. 3:11) – and over the course of history people have discovered that their culture and language and surroundings are pointing them toward the true God. (The book Eternity in their Hearts is a beautiful description of this.)

 

I want to live my life like that lead hunting dog I mentioned in my previous post – one that’s on a quest for the prey (and in this case we’re talking about the one to whom I PRAY). I want my life to point toward God so that others who know me, who interact with me, or who read my writing will be pointed toward God.

 

One day I was at a medical appointment and the conversation I was having with the medical provider included my faith in God. I silently prayed that she would be drawn closer to the living God simply through our brief conversation and interaction.

 

2 Corinthians 2:15 is beautifully paraphrased in The Message Bible: “Everywhere we go, people breathe in the exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God…”

When I see people – or nature – pointing toward God, I want to point my heart in His direction. But I also want to be a pointer – the one whose life helps others to look toward Him.
