A Book-Lover's Pop-Up Shop

Earlier this year, I had an opportunity to participate in a book sale at our church that I'm going to call a Book Lover's Pop-Up Shop because that sounds fun and Pop-Up Shops are trendy these days. 

Although the writers' group based at our church often laments the fact that we don't have a bookstore like our church did in the past (hey everybody, we love books!), those of use who have published books in recent years were thrilled to have a chance to make them available to the congregation. I thought it was so much fun to see the diversity of books! Let me tell you about them!

First, I'll start with the humorous one: 

Samuelism: C is for Cookie by Cindy Goh - She's a stay-at-home-mom to four kiddos, and she's been chronicling the funny things her kids say by drawing cartoons about them! I bought a copy for the 4 kids I nanny to enjoy. They carried it around for days on end, reading it and re-reading it. One of the children who can't read yet has practically memorized the words on each page! I even found them using it as their textbook while playing school! (Hmm, maybe he will learn to read using this book?) Maybe not everyone has the same sense of humor I do, but if you're feeling tired from raising a house full of children (and cleaning up their gross messes), then this book is for you. The kids will enjoy it too (although they might learn some secrets from it - like how the moms/nannies hide in the bathroom to eat ice cream. That secret is now out!) On to more serious business: 

I Belong: A Novella Inspired By True Events, written by my dear friend Suzanne K. Lee - this story tells of Seth, a young man beginning his college years, moving into the dorm and meeting new people there. However, Seth has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and this story allows the reader a first-hand glimpse into the way that it affects his life - and those around him. Someone misinterprets something that Seth said, landing him in trouble with school administration, and... you'll have to read it to find out what happens next. It's available as a Kindle or paperback on Amazon - what a great price!

Created to Live: Becoming the Answer for an Abortion-Free Community

by Cathy Harris - This thought-provoking book speaks to the Christian community about how to love those who have experienced abortion. It's important that the modern day church think about and talk about the subject of abortion. I have recommended this book to several friends who have had abortions as well as those who work in pregnancy care centers. Grab the paperback or Kindle from Amazon. 

Nicodemus by Joy Buchanan - this novella based on biblical history describes Jesus' final days from the perspective of Nicodemus. I enjoyed reading it and taking a fresh look at Bible stories from the eyes of Nicodemus.

Beyond Farewell by Allisa Vermillion - written after the loss of a loved one, this book will help readers process their grief.

The Biblical Guidebook to Deliverance - although this book is written by Randy Clark, it's edited by one of the ladies in our church, Susan Thompson. She co-authors with Christian speakers and teachers - sounds like a fun job to me!
