My Favorite Author & Bucket Lists

"Betsy, you have a baby and you live in Hawaii!" said the text message that popped up on my phone's screen. "#livingthedream," I responded.

It's true, at the moment, in many ways, life is a dream come true. For 38 years my dream was to be a wife and mom one day, then I finally gave birth to our miracle baby. Nearly 2 years after her birth, my husband's job moved us to Hawaii. Right now, I get to hang out with my little girl on the island of Oahu and attempt to write while she takes her afternoon nap. We are truly blessed!

Setting foot in Hawaii was never on our bucket list. Honestly, we don't have much of a bucket list in our house. We had no desire to visit Hawaii, much less any interest in living there. A couple of weeks after arriving on the island, I have changed my mind. Put Hawaii on your bucket list! Visit if you can! Move there only if God makes it very clear that you should do so. (It's an expensive place to live, so you have to have a strategy.) But oh-my-goodness, if you can visit Hawaii, do it. The temperatures are fantastic. The breeze is glorious. The sights are marvelous. And so far where we've been, it's not very "buggy" - meaning you can hang out on the lanai or open your screen-less windows to let in the breeze and not have mosquitoes and flies bothering you like they do on the East Coast.

One of the things I was sad to leave behind in the Washington D.C. area was the community of writers. I became an author while living there, and I connected with numerous other writers, bloggers, and authors. I miss that community! I don't know many people here in Hawaii, but I hope to connect with other Christian writers here. (If you know of Christian writers' groups or groups of Christian artists that meet on Oahu, please connect me with them.)

A favorite author of mine for 25+ years happens to live in Hawaii as well - but she's on another island. Which brings me to my bucket list. We've never been much of bucket-list-making-people. My dream was to be a wife and mom and writer, and one of my husband's dreams is to live in Europe. Like I said, we never had plans to live in Hawaii. But here's my Hawaii bucket list, and it does not include surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, paddle boarding, or anything else involving water. My dream for these next few years is to write books and meet one of my favorite authors, Robin Jones Gunn. I'm rereading several of her books right now and always following her Instagram. Let's see if I can get an opportunity to meet a favorite author-hero-role-model one day!

What's on your bucket list? What is your hope or goal or dream? Do you want to visit Hawaii or live there? Leave me a message!
